The first visit at our periodontist

In the initial visit at our periodontist’s office, he generally examines the patient’s entire medical and dental histories.

At this point, it is important for our periodontist to know if the patient has been taken any medications or if he or she has been under treatment for any condition which could affect the periodontal health, like heart disease or diabetes.

Then, he reviews the gums, verifies if there is any gum line recession, analyses how the teeth match together when closing the mouth or biting and verifies the teeth to ascertain whether there are any of them which are loose.

The periodontist also uses a medical tool called a probe and sets it between the teeth and the gums to assess the depth of the space, named a periodontal pocket.

X-rays could also be taken to analyze the health of the bone underneath the gum line.
