Periodontics represents a branch of dentistry which specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of illnesses of the adjacent and supporting tooth tissues or their substitutes, as well as in the upkeep of their function, health and appearance.
What is a periodontist?
Consequently, periodontists are experts in dentistry who specialize in periodontal disease treatment. They are also specialized in replacing fallen teeth with dental implants.
Periodontists are specialists who undertake extensive training in these domains, as well as three supplementary education years after graduating a dental school.
They treat patients who suffer from mild gingivitis to more severe conditions like periodontitis. The treatments offered by periodontists include:
- Root planning and scaling
- Root surface debridement
- Regenerative operations (reversing the lost tissue and bone)
- Surgical operations for patients who suffer from a serious gum disease
The first visit at our periodontist
In the initial visit at our periodontist’s office, he generally examines the patient’s entire medical and dental histories.
At this point, it is important for our periodontist to know if the patient has been taken any medications or if he or she has been under treatment for any condition which could affect the periodontal health, like heart disease or diabetes.
Then, he reviews the gums, verifies if there is any gum line recession, analyses how the teeth match together when closing the mouth or biting and verifies the teeth to ascertain whether there are any of them which are loose.
The periodontist also uses a medical tool called a probe and sets it between the teeth and the gums to assess the depth of the space, named a periodontal pocket.
X-rays could also be taken to analyze the health of the bone underneath the gum line.
If you suspect you or a family member might be suffering from a periodontal disease, please do not hesitate to call us today!
